Style Icon: Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones

This post contains minor spoilers from HBO's Game of Thrones, but no book spoilers.

Game of Thrones has some of the most beautiful costuming I have ever seen. Each outfit tells the story of the character and the characters' wardrobes evolve as their stories do.

Sansa Stark is a character who has transformed tremendously through the first four seasons of Game of Thrones. In the beginning, Sansa is a young girl, full of dreams and naivety, but by season four, she has learned to play the political games in King's Landing. She's a somewhat controversial character among fans, especially since she begins the series as an annoying, bratty teenager. Through the seasons, she learns quickly that her former dreams for the future are simply fantasy and she must adapt. Her wardrobe reflects her constantly changing status and the careful way she must portray herself to survive. For more on Sansa's sartorial symbolism, this article is definitely worth a read (but beware spoilers!).

I interpreted four of Sansa's looks into modern outfits. With each look, I'll also analyze Sansa's state and what her wardrobe reveals about her own struggles.

Sansa Stark - Little Dove
Necklace | Dress | Belt | Vest | Boots

In the very beginning, Sansa is very much a young lady from Winterfell. She wears her hair the Northern way, had hopes of knights and romance, and wears clothing that is utilitarian, not frivolous. She dresses in simple dresses with warm detailing to protect her from the chill of Winterfell. At this point in the series, her clothing reflects her homeland. The Hound teases Sansa early on by calling her a "pretty talking bird, repeating all the pretty little words they taught [her] to recite."

To bring this look to life, I chose a simple boho-style dress with a floral print, reminiscent of the floral design on Sansa's gown. To accessorize, boots and a faux fur vest are ladylike while still hinting at a colder climate. This outfit is inspired by nature, so top the look off with a replica of Sansa's own dragonfly necklace.

In King's Landing, Sansa learns that words are her armor. She chooses her words and appearance carefully, blending in at first by choice and then by necessity. Her clothing and hairstyles become more ornate -- she is seen wearing this beautiful purple gown several times. At this point, Sansa is becoming disenchanted with reality, quickly realizing that "There are no heroes... In life, the monsters win."

To reflect the ornateness of the dresses Sansa wears in King's Landing, I chose a delicate plum dress with lace and chiffon detailing. Accessorize with subtle wolf jewelry as an ode to the Stark family and a reminder to keep your family close to your heart. A braided updo ties the look together as an homage to the elaborate braided styles of King's Landing.

This is the point in the series where I just want to give Sansa a million hugs. She's played the game of thrones as carefully as possible, somehow surviving through all sorts of twists and turns, but winds up in a nightmarish scenario. Without giving away too many details, the dress Sansa is wearing at this point has embroidery that tells her story in great detail -- a lion slashing at a wolf. At this point, despite her best efforts, she cannot escape the Lannister family.

To recreate this look, I settled on a formal cream and champagne ensemble. A unique, gold hair piece and glittery heels are party-worthy, but the monochromatic, grown-up color pallet is a dramatic shift from Sansa's previously girlish wardrobe. Finish the look with a lion necklace -- at this point, Sansa cannot afford to be loyal to her own family and must wear the banner of her hostages.

Sansa undergoes a major makeover at the end of season four, complete with a dramatic hair change. I like to think of this Sansa as "goth Sansa." After all the hardships she has been through, this Sansa is made of stone. She is cunning and calculated and seeks her own survival. Sansa herself thinks, "My skin has gone from porcelain, to ivory, to steel."

The original dress is floor-length with feathered sleeves and a corset; I chose a little black dress with a beaded neckline for the modern interpretation. Accessories are bold choices for a bold Sansa -- try a a chunky bracelet similar to her necklace and a statement ring with wolf fangs to reflect Sansa's own ferocity.

Life According to Instagram

Life According to Instagram

1. I've been so behind on comics. When I went to the comic shop, I picked up a huge stack. I can't wait to get through all these and get caught up.

2. My newest purchases from Look Human -- this magical girl shirt and Sailor Moon tank top -- and a donut sweater from Target. #MagicalGirlLife

3. "Quit slacking and make it happen" is my current mantra, so I got it printed on notebook from May Designs.

4. A freshly dyed and shaved head makes me feel like a new lady! This reminds me... time to book another hair appointment!

5. My favorite local vegan business, Capital City Bakery, teamed up with Sinfull Bakery to bake kolaches in all kinds of flavors, like pizza, blueberry cheesecake, and Thanksgiving dinner. They were fantastic.

6. During finals week, my university hosted a petting zoo with cute animals to improve student morale. I made friends with an adorable hedgehog (and it definitely improved my morale).

7. One of my favorite Christmas gifts? This amazing American Horror Story: Coven-esque hat. Very Zoe Benson, no?

8. A big goal of mine this year is to minimize my possessions. I keep a lot of extra stuff around -- like I've said, I'm kind of a packrat -- so I'm trying to be ruthless and get rid of things I don't like or won't use. We reorganized our bookshelf, and now our comics look beautiful!

9. My biggest project last semester was creating a start-up business, from idea to pitch. Our final product was pitched to real investors. I'm so proud of my team and our final result.

If you're on Instagram, we should be friends

I love peeking into the daily lives of others. (Plus I post way more photos on Instagram that never make it to this blog!)

February Activities

Romance yourself. I'm a big fan of year-round self-love, but Valentine's Day inspires a little extra self-lovin'. Write a love letter to yourself about all your favorite features and qualities, spend a day doing all your favorite things, or make yourself an elaborate dinner.

Light a candle when you work. I've started doing this and it is divine! Lighting a candle will help you focus and it's an instant mood brightener. Bonus points: choose a scent that corresponds to a mood you want, like lavender for relaxation.

Make time to read a book every day. Reading is such a valuable habit to cultivate. If you squeeze in just 15 minutes of reading time a day, you will have no problem finishing a book or two a month. Read a little before bed, while waiting for an appointment, or with breakfast. Reading is one of the cheapest, easiest ways to learn more and expand your vocabulary -- hop to it! Kristen has some great tips for finding time to read, and if you need recommendations, check my Pinterest board.

Take part in #28DaysofBlackCosplay. February is Black History Month, and in celebration, a group of cosplayers is partnering up to feature a black cosplayer or cosplay duo each day. Check out the hashtag and follow along, there are so many great cosplayers out there!

PAX South 2015

For the #PAXSoufSC challenge -- a twofer, a selfie and my badge! 😍 #PAXSouth

I don't self-identify as a gamer. I play games, but I tend to play "casual" games like Animal Crossing and The Sims, and I don't like a lot of the associations that come along with being a gamer.

So when PAX South came to town, I wasn't sure if I would attend. PAX was the first convention expo aimed at gamers, and it has a totally different vibe than an anime, comic, or pop culture convention. I was also nervous because Penny Arcade has left a bad taste in my mouth a few times -- did I really want to go to a convention with Penny Arcade supporters in the wake of not-so-great gaming happenings?

Between several internet friends attending the convention, being invited to be on a panel, and learning how much the convention itself embraces diversity, I decided to give it a shot. Long story short, I'm so glad I went and gave the convention a fair shot. I'm pretty sure I'll be a regular attendee!

The expo itself was mostly based around industry-related events, game demos, and more. Compared to the average convention I attend, there was far less fan-run content and far more industry guests and professionals. It was sort of unreal to be in the same room as companies like Twitch and Nintendo.

Because of the different vibe, I didn't cosplay myself. It was a relief not to have to worry about costumes! There were some cosplayers present, but the large majority of people were in street clothes.

PAX South was the smallest PAX so far, but it has plenty of room to grow. I think the timing was a little off -- some big players in the industry didn't announce that they were attending until a week prior. Even though it was small, it was still one of the most organized events I've been to.

The only strange part was the gender disparity -- there were definitely more men than women present. Even though PAX itself was very accepting -- the diversity lounge was AWESOME! -- it was a little weird to be so far in the minority. I know gaming is kind of a boy's club still, but I expected a more even split at the expo itself.

THANK YOU for the full house at our Women in Geek Girl Media panel! ❤️ #PAXSoufSC #PAXSouth

Women in Geek Girl Media Panel

I was so happy to be a part of this panel and meet these lovely ladies in person. The panel went really well -- we had a totally full room! We even had people talk to us after the panel to ask questions on how to get started creating content and how to be inclusive of others. It was a fantastic experience and I hope to do more panels soon.

You can watch the panel in its entirety below, and be sure to check out my fellow panelists!

Panelists:

Game Demos

Like I said, I'm not a big gamer, especially not with the more popular games, like first-person shooters. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of games at PAX South. I love creative indie games, but there were also bigger companies like Nintendo, tabletop classics and newcomers, and more. Here are some of my favorites that I recommend and you should definitely check out!

  • Capsule Force. I'm a little biased because my friend Jelfish is on the dev team, but Capsule Force is chaotic fun with retro, anime-inspired graphics. Fight against your friends to get to your side of the map and win. It's available now on Steam and PS4.
  • Just Shapes and Beats. This is a co-op rhythm-based game with awesome music. You are a shape fighting against music... or something? It's awesome and I definitely want to play through the game when it's out.
  • Gigantic. Gigantic reminded me of Team Fortress 2, but more robust. You pick a character from a variety of classes and play against another team. It's only in alpha testing for now, but I can't wait to play the full version.
  • Fibbage. Fibbage is like Cards Against Humanity, but everyone fills in the blank of a given sentence and tries to trick other people into thinking their answer is the correct one. It's great for literal people, so Liz and I really enjoyed it.

The Majora's mask replica by @likovacs was absolutely BEAUTIFUL in person! #takemymoney #PAXSouth #PAXSoufSC

Convention Swag

All my convention purchases were painfully practical this time around. I guess that's how you know you're getting older! Oh well.
  • A companion cube sweater. I love We Love Fine and Valve, so when I saw this, I knew I had to have it! This counts as a practical purchase because I own very few sweaters.
  • Gunnar Optiks glasses. I can't pretend they don't look dorky on me, but I'm hoping that these computer/gaming glasses will help protect my vision. I spend so many hours on the computer every day; it seems unreasonable not to try and protect my vision! Liz and I bought matching pairs because we're total nerds.
  • Disney tsum tsums. Okay, this doesn't count as a convention purchase or a practical purchase. After the convention on Sunday, we visited the mall right next door specifically to buy tsum tsums. The cuteness is unavoidable. I got a medium Marie and a small Minnie and Daisy.

My #PAXSouth swag: this cute companion cube sweater from @welovefinetees! #PAXSoufSC

Overall, I was impressed by the quality of PAX South! I will more than likely become a regular attendee. If you are into gaming or gaming culture in any respect, I definitely recommend that you check out a PAX near you!

Finally, Liz made an awesome video that really captures the scale and fun of PAX -- check it out!

Do you consider yourself a gamer?

Convention Wish List

This is my first time participating in 5 Fandom Fridays! This is a weekly link-up started by The Nerdy Girlie and SuperSpaceChick. Each week brings a different prompt. I'll be participating here and there.

This week's prompt was "Conventions I've Been to or Wish to Attend." Since I always blog about conventions I attend, I thought I'd share my convention wish list! This list would have looked different just a few years ago -- SDCC and DragonCon are two conventions that I've always wanted to attend, and now I have!

5 Fandom Fridays: Convention Wish List
1. New York Comic Con (NYCC)
From my understanding, NYCC is like SDCC's northern counterpart. It's huge, full of amazing guests and vendors, and my friends who have been all love it!

2. Anime Expo
Even though I'm not into anime as much as I used to be, it still feels like Anime Expo is the otaku pilgrimage I have to make!

3. Toronto Comic Arts Festival
I didn't think I'd be interested in a Canadian convention, but apparently I like a lot of artists and internet personalities who are Canadian or live north enough in the United States to trek to TCAF each year. I am always filled with envy whenever I see posts from TCAF!

4. ColossalCon
ColossalCon is located at a resort that has the largest indoor water park in the country. You know what that means -- plenty of beach/water-themed photoshoots! This seems like such an amazing convention to cosplay at.

5. GeekGirlCon
I feel like GeekGirlCon would be such an inspiring, enriching experience. I have visions of presenting a panel or two and celebrating the wonder of geek girls everywhere.

What's on your convention wish list?
