Style Icon: Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones

This post contains minor spoilers from HBO's Game of Thrones, but no book spoilers.

Game of Thrones has some of the most beautiful costuming I have ever seen. Each outfit tells the story of the character and the characters' wardrobes evolve as their stories do.

Sansa Stark is a character who has transformed tremendously through the first four seasons of Game of Thrones. In the beginning, Sansa is a young girl, full of dreams and naivety, but by season four, she has learned to play the political games in King's Landing. She's a somewhat controversial character among fans, especially since she begins the series as an annoying, bratty teenager. Through the seasons, she learns quickly that her former dreams for the future are simply fantasy and she must adapt. Her wardrobe reflects her constantly changing status and the careful way she must portray herself to survive. For more on Sansa's sartorial symbolism, this article is definitely worth a read (but beware spoilers!).

I interpreted four of Sansa's looks into modern outfits. With each look, I'll also analyze Sansa's state and what her wardrobe reveals about her own struggles.

Sansa Stark - Little Dove
Necklace | Dress | Belt | Vest | Boots

In the very beginning, Sansa is very much a young lady from Winterfell. She wears her hair the Northern way, had hopes of knights and romance, and wears clothing that is utilitarian, not frivolous. She dresses in simple dresses with warm detailing to protect her from the chill of Winterfell. At this point in the series, her clothing reflects her homeland. The Hound teases Sansa early on by calling her a "pretty talking bird, repeating all the pretty little words they taught [her] to recite."

To bring this look to life, I chose a simple boho-style dress with a floral print, reminiscent of the floral design on Sansa's gown. To accessorize, boots and a faux fur vest are ladylike while still hinting at a colder climate. This outfit is inspired by nature, so top the look off with a replica of Sansa's own dragonfly necklace.

In King's Landing, Sansa learns that words are her armor. She chooses her words and appearance carefully, blending in at first by choice and then by necessity. Her clothing and hairstyles become more ornate -- she is seen wearing this beautiful purple gown several times. At this point, Sansa is becoming disenchanted with reality, quickly realizing that "There are no heroes... In life, the monsters win."

To reflect the ornateness of the dresses Sansa wears in King's Landing, I chose a delicate plum dress with lace and chiffon detailing. Accessorize with subtle wolf jewelry as an ode to the Stark family and a reminder to keep your family close to your heart. A braided updo ties the look together as an homage to the elaborate braided styles of King's Landing.

This is the point in the series where I just want to give Sansa a million hugs. She's played the game of thrones as carefully as possible, somehow surviving through all sorts of twists and turns, but winds up in a nightmarish scenario. Without giving away too many details, the dress Sansa is wearing at this point has embroidery that tells her story in great detail -- a lion slashing at a wolf. At this point, despite her best efforts, she cannot escape the Lannister family.

To recreate this look, I settled on a formal cream and champagne ensemble. A unique, gold hair piece and glittery heels are party-worthy, but the monochromatic, grown-up color pallet is a dramatic shift from Sansa's previously girlish wardrobe. Finish the look with a lion necklace -- at this point, Sansa cannot afford to be loyal to her own family and must wear the banner of her hostages.

Sansa undergoes a major makeover at the end of season four, complete with a dramatic hair change. I like to think of this Sansa as "goth Sansa." After all the hardships she has been through, this Sansa is made of stone. She is cunning and calculated and seeks her own survival. Sansa herself thinks, "My skin has gone from porcelain, to ivory, to steel."

The original dress is floor-length with feathered sleeves and a corset; I chose a little black dress with a beaded neckline for the modern interpretation. Accessories are bold choices for a bold Sansa -- try a a chunky bracelet similar to her necklace and a statement ring with wolf fangs to reflect Sansa's own ferocity.

Style Icon: Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones

Style Icon: Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones

This post will avoid spoilers from season 4, but may mention some details from the first 3 seasons - you have been warned!

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you probably know about my Game of Thrones obsession. I love all the different characters and storylines - the power struggles, the plotting and scheming! One of  my favorite aspects of Game of Thrones is the costume design. Each costume is incredibly detailed and tells a story about the character wearing it.

One of my current favorite characters is Margaery Tyrell. Margaery is described in the books to be "as clever as she is pretty," and has a kind spirit. Of course, she still has her own agenda, too! She comes to King's Landing as an outsider from Highgarden, (where I would definitely want to live - a matriarchal society that is basically a giant garden? Yes, please!). She quickly assimilates and becomes well-loved by the people of Westoros. Her costumes are uniquely Margaery and represent her heritage and personality.

Margaery Tyrell's Signature Style

Rich Jacquard Fabrics and Light Blue

At first glance, Margaery's day-to-day dresses look the same, but there are subtle differences. Margaery's clothing is almost always a light, baby blue with a bodice made of an intricate damask design. Her dresses are made of rich fabrics like velvet and silks.

Deep V-Necks, Backless Dresses, and Cut-Outs

Another consistent feature in Margaery's clothing is the presence of skin. Margaery's style is decidedly more modern than her peers, with low v-necks and stylish cut-outs. To me, the drastic difference represents both where she came from (a different place with a different climate and social rules) as well as her tendency to put her arm around others when she speaks with them. I think Margaery uses touch to establish intimacy and trust when she speaks with others (though we will have to see how genuine it is!) For more about Margaery's "armor," this post is a wonderful read.

Rose Details

The sigil of House Tyrell is a golden rose, and sometimes Margaery is known as The Little Rose. Margaery has rose detailing in some of her outfits. I especially love her rose belt, complete with thorns.

Big Hair (Full of Secrets)

Margaery's long, curly brown hair is also one of the key elements to her style. She is usually seen with some or all of it pulled back. Like many other costume design choices in the series, the hairstyles worn by women represent where they are from and their character development. (For example, Sansa, from the north, begins wearing her hair in the southern style to blend in, and eventually wears it "like Lady Margaery.")

Margaery-Inspired Outfits

Since Margaery's style is so defined, it's easy to translate it into some wearable, modern looks.

This dress screams Margaery to me! Between the rose print detailing, low v-neck, and the perfect shade of blue, Margaery would definitely wear this in a modern-day Westoros. Paired with a rose chain belt to imitate Margaery's own, rose accessories, and delicate sandals, this dress is a perfect way to combine beauty and ambition. Add a lacy cardigan to throw on top in case your climate isn't as forgiving as the Highgarden.

Style Icon: Margaery Tyrell

I love this dress - the pattern is like the one Margaery wore in the Entertainment Weekly photoshoot, and the cut-out fits Margaery's style. This look is a little darker and a little dressier - perfect for going to a fancy event and plotting alliances. Pair it with gold accessories, sparkly glitter heels, and a bright pink lipstick. The earrings and rings both have tiny rose details, a subtle hint to House Tyrell. Wear your hair pulled up with cascading curls for the ultimate Margaery effect.

Style Icon: Effie Trinket

effie closeups
Effie's signature saturated, matchy-matchy looks.
She's outrageous, oblivious, and over-the-top -- both in personality and style. Who? Effie Trinket, of course!

I only recently saw The Hunger Games, but I instantly bonded with Effie, a stylish Capitol resident and the escorts of the main characters into the lavish world of the Capitol. Effie is ignorant to the brutality of the game, and is known for her charm, attention to manners, and cheery demeanor. Like the other residents of the Capitol, Effie places a lot of emphasis on her appearance, which makes her a really fun character to draw style inspiration from! Since the next movie in the trilogy, Catching Fire, is coming out soon, I thought it'd be a good time to analyze her fashion choices.

Effie Trinket's Signature Style

Effie Trinket's outfits from Catching Fire, so far.

Bold color combinations

Effie isn't afraid of color! Her outfits often feature bright, attention-grabbing colors and daring combinations, such as pale gold and lavender, peacock-like green and blue, and so on. She rarely wears true neutral colors. To channel a little bit of this Captiol gal's style, try wearing solid, saturated pieces and pairing them in unexpected combinations. A quick look at the color wheel should help -- try analogous or complementary color combinations to get her look.

Structured, feminine pieces

In each of her outfits, Effie highly emphasizes her own femininity. She is never seen in pants, instead preferring dresses and skirt-suits, and always in sky-high heels. In addition, she tends to go for over-the-top exaggeration of her proportions in the form of excessive ruffles, huge shoulder pads, cinched waists, and even tall collars. To adapt this style element for yourself, utilize pieces with cuts that produce an optical illusion with your proportions, like the currently trending peplum or 80's-style shoulder pads.

Effie loves pieces that emphasize her femininity.

Eccentric hair and makeup

Just as well-planned as each piece of her outfit is Effie's eccentric makeup and ever-changing hair. Her looks are a little bold for everyday wear, but consider matching your lipstick, nails, or even eyelashes to your outfit color combinations for her matchy-matchy, everything-in-its-place look. Effie's signature accessory is a flower clip in her hair -- be sure to have one in every color for every possible outfit!

Mix of classic and trendy

An interesting aspect of the Capitol costuming in the movie was the mix of classic cuts and color combinations with trendy and avant-garde style elements. A purple skirted suit with black pumps is a timeless look, but Effie's version includes outrageous shoulder detailing, ruffles, and rich fabrics. For a little Capitol-inspired juxtaposition in your own wardrobe, pair classic pieces with unexpected details, on-trend accessories, or even just in unexpected colors.

Effie-Inspired Outfits

I created a few Effie-inspired looks that use the same style elements, but hopefully in a more wearable way. I tried to keep all of these outfits affordable and appropriate for everyday wear, while maintaining Effie's signature style.

This first outfit is based off of Effie's fluffy red gown from Catching Fire. A structured, red dress with a peplum at the waist emulates the volume of Effie's dress without being excessive. For this look, I chose two dresses -- one that is easily affordable, and one that I could never hope to own. Continue to monotone look by pairing the dress with fire-red pumps with feminine detailing to echo the dress design. Finally, geometric gold jewelry completes the look. This outfit is perfect for any formal event where you want to turn heads.

For an outfit for those more relaxing Capitol days, pair a lavender dress with gold accessories. A waist-cinching gold belt with a bow detail is perfectly feminine and plays off the light, airy feel of the dress. Add on metallic gold pendant, cuff, headband, and sandals, and you're ready for a day of leisurely shopping, drink sipping, and mingling with the upper crust.

Effie Trinket The Reaping Outfit Inspiration

For this re-imagining of Effie's stylish deep plum Reaping Day suit, I first chose this layered plum dress to emulate the ruffles and exaggerated shoulders of Effie's suit. Next, top the dress with a fuchsia blazer to maintain the formal feel of the original outfit. Accessorize with bold pink and purple makeup, a floral necklace, a flower clip in your cute updo, and simple black pumps. Although Effie wears this on a suspenseful day, I can see this outfit being appropriate for an occasion like a fancy brunch!

Whose style should I pick apart next? Which was your favorite outfit?

Style Icon: Ramona Flowers

I've been wanting to start a series where I construct outfits based on characters that are sartorially inspiring. This is the first post in my Style Icon series!

If you couldn't tell by now, I adore Ramona Flowers from the Scott Pilgrim series. Aside from being a wonderful character, she also has mad style. So, if you've ever wanted to possess Ramona Flowers' style, look no further! I'll talk about some elements of Ramona's style and then show some example outfits I put together.

Ramona Flowers' Signature Style

Ramona Flowers Collages

Bright hair and bold colors

Ramona Flowers is known for her rapidly changing hair colors and hair cuts -- anything from hot pink to bright blue to teal. If you want to try out being Ramona for a day, try a wig (either from Ebay or my personal favorite, Arda Wigs). If you are looking for a bolder everyday look, Manic Panic hair color is the way to go!

Ramona also coordinates her current hair color with her outfit, so be sure to match your hair to your clothes!

Interesting jackets, boots, and layers

Living in Canada, jackets, boots, and layering are utilitarian, but Ramona has exceptionally cute items! From military to leather, Ramona is always rocking an adorable coat, and she has an enviable boot collection. Combined with her innate sense of layering, Ramona's outfits are always complex and interesting to look at.

Unique tights and socks

From roller derby-esque socks to brightly colored tights, Ramona is not afraid to make a statement with legwear. If you are feeling timid, start with black leggings or tights under a skirt, but if you are feeling more daring, try knee socks, patterned leggings, or neon tights.

Signature accessories

Ramona is always seen with a small black choker necklace (revealed by actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead to be her deceased brother's shoelaces). Ramona also loves stars, and the motif appears on her subspace purse as well as in hair accessories and on a ring she wears occasionally. Choose your own signature motif and incorporate it into your outfits.

Ramona-Inspired Outfits

Amazon.ca Delivery Girl

Jacket | Shorts | Similar Tights |  Button

This first outfit is based on something Ramona would wear to deliver packages for Amazon.ca. Start with this tongue-in-cheek hipster shirt (a throwback to a shirt Ramona wears in the comics) and add some color with bright shorts and tights. Throw on a varsity letterman jacket and a comfortable hat with a Sex Bob-Omb pin and you're all set to skate through the subspace highway.

Ramona's Finest Hour

This look is an updated version of Ramona's ensemble in the final volume of Scott Pilgrim (and the one I made a costume of!). First, I was inspired by these galaxy print leggings. Build the look with a fuschia skater dress, then balance out the girliness of the outfit with leather combat boots and a biker jacket. For accessories, I chose Ramona's signature subspace purse and a black necklace, representing her choker. I thought today's Ramona Flowers might try out ombre hair in fun colors like pink and purple!

Seven Evil Exes

This outfit is a reimagining of the olive green shirt dress that Mary Elizabeth Winstead wears in the movie version. To keep the same utilitarian feel, I chose a bold military-style jacket as the focal piece for the look. To keep it comfy and casual, layer a soft grey hoodie and a denim skirt with plain black leggings and worn-in black boots. Complete the look with your subspace purse. Although Ramona never has pure white hair in the comics or movie, I think it would be a fun change and it fits nicely with this outfit. This is the perfect outfit for going out and running into an ex (or two!).

What is your favorite aspect of Ramona's style?
