My Geeky Confessions

Yep, another confessions post - this time, my geeky confessions! This link up was started by Mariko at Gamerwife, and I have loved reading through all the posts! It's amazing to see how many people in our community don't follow the arbitrary "rules" of being a geek.

One of the biggest issues in the geek community is simply others deciding who is and is not "geeky enough." These gatekeepers make it no fun for anyone. I love that we, as a community, are starting to re-claim what it means to be a geek. In my opinion, if you identify as a geek, then you are a geek - no questions asked. That being said, I've got tons of geeky confessions, so let me share them with you!

1. I don't really play video games.

I love video games, but they are also the one form of media that punish you if you are not skilled. Unfortunately, I am not a good gamer. I find far more enjoyment in watching others take on challenging parts of the game - I'm really in it for the story, anyway! The games I do play end up being open-world exploration games, like The Sims, Animal Crossing, or Tomodachi Life, where skill isn't really a factor.

2. I don't get Doctor Who.

I watched Doctor Who a little bit in high school, which seems to be right before everyone started latching on to it in the United States. I liked the show alright, but now everyone is acting like it's an amazing show when I think it's pretty mediocre. I'll admit I haven't watched an episode in years, so maybe there's something I'm missing, but it's just not my thing.

3. I feel weird writing about cosplay.

I've said over and over again how anybody can cosplay, no matter your age, height, weight, skin color, skill level, income level... and I totally believe that! At the same time, though, I don't find my cosplay to be super impressive, so sometimes I feel like I'm the wrong person to be writing about it. I'm not well-known, I'm not super skilled, and I've never won an award, but I've learned a lot in my time as a cosplayer and I want to share it with others.

4. I watch way more anime than I let on.

I was a huge anime nerd when I was younger, like many of us! I go through phases where I don't watch a lot, and phases where I totally ignore it, but right now, I'm keeping up with quite a few series. Thanks to the magic of Crunchyroll, you can watch episodes an hour after they air live in Japan. (My 14-year-old self would NOT believe that if you told her!) I've been watching Sword Art Online, No Game No Life, Sailor Moon Crystal, and Attack on Titan.

What are your geeky confessions?
