#Nerdvember Day 16-30 Recap

#Nerdvember
#Nerdvember is over! (Okay, so it's almost 2015, but December is a tough month!) Throughout November, I attempted to wear my geek pride on a daily basis. If you missed the first half of this recap, here you go!

Overall, I had a blast with this challenge. I decided to try for all 30 days, but looking back, I wish I'd focused on creating more impressive outfits instead of a lot of outfits. At the same time, this is probably more indicative of what I tend to wear during a normal, busy month (though with more graphic t-shirts!), so maybe it works out just fine.

#Nerdvember
Day 16 - Mucha-style Rarity - This tee is one of my favorite nerdy pieces of clothing. It's ridiculously soft and super cute!
(T-shirt: We Love Fine)

Day 17 - The Cat's Pajamas - November was cold and I spent a lot of time studying or writing. I really only have a handful of sweaters, so the cat sweater made a second appearance!
(Sweater: ModCloth | Hat: Plato's Closet (Similar) )

#Nerdvember
Day 18 - Sugarless Gum - I wore my Princess Bubblegum t-shirt to a hot yoga class. This shirt is a replica of a shirt PB wears in the show!
(T-shirt: We Love Fine)

Day 19 - Ishea Online - Ishea is a webcomic/story created by my friend Joss. Check it out if you like medieval fiction or webcomics!

#Nerdvember
Day 20 - The Mockingjay Lives! - I wore an old favorite outfit with my Hunger Games bracelet/ring for a Hunger Games pub quiz and the midnight premiere! We won 3rd place, meaning we didn't win a thing, but it was still incredibly fun.
(Cardigan: ModCloth | Necklace: The Limited | Shorts: Urban Outfitters (Similar) | Boots: Madden Girl | Mockingjay Bracelet: c/o Born Pretty)

#Nerdvember
Day 21 - Batgirl Rising - Something simple and comfortable to go see Amy Schumer live!
(Batgirl Varsity Jacket: Forever 21 | Pants: ModCloth | Shoes: Steve Madden)

Day 22 - The Hero of Time - This hoodie has been my companion on cold, lazy days for a few years, but I only found out the true story when I posted this photo on Instagram. It was given to me by a friend, who had it appear in his house and he had no clue who it belonged to. When I posted this photo, the original owner -- Scully -- commented to fill in the rest of the story!

#Nerdvember
Day 23 - Vest Buds - This vest and this dress are some of my favorite clothing pieces I have.
(Vest: Forever 21 (Similar) | Dress: ModCloth | Shoes: Steve Madden)

Day 24 - Gotta Catch 'Em All - I've had this shirt since high school! I remember thinking it was one of the only cute, nerdy t-shirts for ladies. How times have changed!
(T-Shirt: Hot Topic)

#Nerdvember
Day 25 - The Art of the Dress - I'll admit, this one was a stretch for Nerdvember. I bought this necklace because it reminds me of cosplay!
(Shawl: ModCloth | T-shirt: Express | Necklace: ModCloth | Rings: Ruche, Altar'd State)

  #Nerdvember
Day 26 - Kawaii Adventure Time - Yep, another magical girl-themed shirt. This time, it was a gift, so unfortunately I'm not sure where it was purchased.

Day 27 - Fanatic - I'm totally nerdy about animals.
(T-shirt: Gift | Pants: ModCloth | Necklace: Vegan Cuts | Rings: Forever 21 | Cat Purse: Secondhand)

#Nerdvember
Day 28 - Little Red Riding Hood - Inspired by the classic fairy tale for a cozy Thanksgiving day.
(T-shirt: Urban Outfitters (Similar) | Shawl: ModCloth | Skirt: H&M)

Day 29 - Jazzercise - I joined my mom at an exercise class, so that means another cute tank top from Look Human!
(Tank top: Look Human | Sports bra: Victoria's Secret)

#Nerdvember
Day 30 - The Fairest of Them All - For my final outfit, I did a Snow White-inspired outfit! That's what this dress always reminds me of anyway, so why not go with it?
(Bow: Forever 21 | Dress: ModCloth | Cardigan: ModCloth)

Are you going to participate in Nerdvember next year?

P.S. - I'm starting to clean through my closet and I'm selling clothes I no longer wear on Poshmark. Follow my closet to keep up with my listings!

#Nerdvember Day 1-15 Recap

#Nerdvember
#Nerdvember is a project run by Set to Stunning, challenging participants to don their nerdy accessories and clothing throughout the month of November. Originally, I thought I'd participate here and there, but after a streak of a few days, I felt like I had to keep it up all month long! It's been a lot of fun, even though it's a challenge to come up with something every single day. To follow my outfits in real time, make sure you're following me on Instagram.

Going through the Nerdvember tag on Instagram makes me so happy. It was only a short time ago that geeky clothing didn't exist in feminine cuts and styles, and look where we are now! Plus, everyone participating in Nerdvember has a style all their own - I love seeing how others wear their geek.

Nerdvember Day 1-2
Day 1 - Nightwing Inspired - Nightwing is one of my biggest fictional crushes! I think of him every time I combine blue and black.
(Bow: Forever 21 | Pin: Artist Alley | Cardigan: ModCloth | Top: Ruche (Similar) | Skirt: H&M | Shoes: Steve Madden)

Day 2 - Final Form Madoka Inspired - Space + Magical Girls = the best combination.
(Top: Look Human | Leggings: Think Geek | Boots: ModCloth)
Nerdvember
Day 3 - Win or Die - I have a lot of Game of Thrones items and apparel, but this Westeros map t-shirt is my definitely my favorite. It's subtle but still geeky.
(Westeros map t-shirt: HBO)

Day 4 - Mami Tomoe Inspired - Another magical girl themed outfit, this time after my favorite girl from Madoka Magica. The soul gem necklace is a fun detail.
(Necklace: Starlight Deco Dream | Cardigan: ModCloth | Dress: ModCloth)
Nerdvember
Day 5 - We Are Sex Bob-Omb! - One of my favorite geeky shirts! It looks like a regular band tee, but it's actually for a fictional concert.
(Battle of the Bands Tee: TeeFury | Leather jacket: Target (Similar) | Jeans: Express)

Day 6 - Interstellar Inspired - I went with a group of friends to see Interstellar. Another lady on the #Nerdvember tag wore a space-inspired outfit when she saw the film, so I followed suite!
(Studded bow: Forever 21 (Similar) | Space shirt: Target | High-waisted shorts: ModCloth | Boots: ModCloth)
Nerdvember
Day 7 - Thanks for Saving Me from the Zombies, Batgirl - My subtle nerdiness this day was my favorite Batearrang pin (which I subsequently ruined via accidental bathroom spill, whomp whomp).
(Pin: Batearrang |Top: Ruche (Similar) | Cardigan: Forever 21 (via thrift shop))
Nerdvember
Day 8 - Lazy Magical Girl - I never realized I had so much magical girl-themed clothing until this challenge.
(Bow: Forever 21 | T-Shirt: Look Human | Skirt: H&M | Socks: Ebay | Boots: ModCloth)

Day 9 - Sailor Moon Transformation - I love this necklace from Treno Nights so much! It's a real locket - it opens and closes, and you can put photos inside.
(Necklace: Treno Nights | Dress: ModCloth | Cardigan: ModCloth | Purse: Forever 21 (Similar))
Nerdvember
Day 10 - Mmm, Donuts... - I saw a few bloggers with this sweater and had to pick it up for myself. It reminds me of the classic donut from The Simpsons!
(Sweater: Target | Top: Ruche (Similar))

Day 11 - Science Fiction, Double Feature - This Rocky Horror t-shirt is one of my all-time favorites - it's got a flattering cut, is super comfortable, and has a super cute design.
(Scarf: American Eagle (Similar) | Leather jacket: Target (Similar) | Rocky Horror V-Neck: Convention purchase | Skirt: Ebay | Boots: ModCloth)
Nerdvember
Day 12 - Batgirl of Burnside - I purchased this dress because it reminded me of Stephanie Brown's Batgirl. Pairing it with this jacket feels more like Batgirl's new outfit, and I'm loving it.
(Leather jacket: Target (Similar) | Pin: Artist Alley | Dress: Target (Similar) | Boots: Madden Girl)

Day 13 - Well-Read - Because there's nothing nerdier than wearing a sweater with a cat reading a book to spend all day at the library.
(Sweater: ModCloth | Shirt: Urban Outfitters (Similar) | Jeans: Express | Boots: Madden Girl)
Nerdvember
Day 14 - Sailor Rebels - For the gym, lounging all day, or the days you don't want to leave the house.
(Top: Look Human)

Day 15 - Winter is Coming - To get the joke on this shirt, you have to be a Game of Thrones fan and a fan of the doge meme, and as I have found out, that is a pretty small Venn diagram of people... but this is still one of my all-time favorite shirts.

Daily Outfit: Cropped

Cropped

This past weekend, I went to Rooster Teeth Expo for my third year in a row! I don't usually cosplay at this convention - I don't have anything that would fit the genre - so instead I photographed other cosplayers and cute street style. I wanted to wear something cute that would still allow me to roam around the con floor and photograph things easily.

I want to be totally honest with you - wearing an outfit with a crop top, with shorts, as a chubby woman, is totally intimidating. It's not because I'm not confident in my body (even though it's a struggle sometimes) - it's because everyone else assumes that I'm not happy with the body I have. Let me explain...

Cropped

Almost every time I refer to myself as "chubby," people think it means I think my body is unsatisfactory, but to me, it's just a description. Part of the issue, I think, is that our culture attaches a value to these words. Fitting the ideal is good, existing outside of it is bad. Words like "chubby" or "fat" usually include the connotation of that person having less worth (or self-control, or attractiveness)... but when you believe every body is a good body, then these words lose that connotation.

People always say, "You're not chubby!" But that's just not true. I'm firmly in the "overweight" category of BMI (even though BMI is outdated and incorrect) and I'm definitely not "skinny" or "curvy." I'm on the edge of straight sizing and plus sizing. It's not a debatable fact - chubby is an apt description for my body.

Cropped

What people really mean when they object to my usage of the word "chubby" is that I'm a valuable person, and that realization is a little heartbreaking. Being chubby and having value as a person are not mutually exclusive, but the way bodies are presented in our culture, it can often seem like the two are at odds with each other.

No, the intimidating part is not my confidence level. It's not that others might see my not-flat stomach, or my rockin' thunder thighs, but rather that they assume I should be embarrassed by my body. I've been told, to my face, that my legs are too pale to wear skirts, that I'm too chubby to wear dresses, that I should never wear shorts.

But at my core, I believe that anyone should wear whatever they want. I believe that dressing in a "flattering" way means concealing parts of your body that others deem less than perfect - and that sometimes, that's not the way you want to dress. And when it comes down to it, I dress for me, not for other people - so I'm going to wear what I want.

Forest Frolicking

Forest Frolicking

I'm starting to fall in love with mori girl fashion in a way I've never fallen in love with clothing before. I still adore lolita fashion and won't be giving it up anytime soon, but mori is so much more freeing.

I think my favorite part of mori is the archetype of a mori girl - the nature-loving forest nymph. While there are no true "rules" to this style, thinking of the archetype helps me focus on the feeling I want my outfit to achieve. Floaty, fluttery layers, and a natural, effortless-looking femininity... at least, that's what I aim for! Even in my regular clothing, I'm finding that mori is having more and more of an influence (layers!).

With Kellie, doing our best "solemn street style photo" pose.

The local mori girls hosted a picnic in a park. I wish I had snapped a few photos of the picnic itself, because it was adorable! We brought homemade tea and lemonade in mason jars and delicious cakes. There were even cute paper straws. We got rained on, but luckily it was after the majority of the picnic.

After the rainfall, we trekked into a nearby trail. Everything was green and alive after the rain - perfect for exploring and taking photos!
