Mani Monday: I First Met Her in a Dream

Madoka Magica-Inspired Manicure
Julep Lois and e.l.f. glitter polish

This manicure was inspired by one of my favorite anime series of all time, Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I originally wanted to do my nails inspired by my favorite character, Mami Tomoe, and her classic color scheme of brown, gold, and yellow, but realized the only gold I have is in glitter form. Instead, I set out to replicate Madoka's soul gem, a beautiful pale pink and gold.

This metallic pink polish acts as a neutral on my pinkish skintone, but the gold glitter fade makes it pop. I love expressing my love for the series in subtle ways so this manicure is one of my favorites! Nobody else has to know it was inspired by Madoka, but that makes it all the more special to me.

By the way, if you haven't seen Madoka Magica yet, it's available on Crunchy Roll! I've been re-watching the entire series during the break. It's only 12 episodes so it goes by quickly.

Julep Maven - August 2013 Boho Glam Box

Update:
I am very sad to report that Julep is not an all-vegan company, as they have previously claimed. I support many companies that aren't fully vegan, but Julep has repeatedly told those who asked that all their products were vegan. I will no longer be purchasing from this company and I urge you to do the same. Watch this video for more information on Julep's dishonesty and inconsistency regarding their products.

Julep Maven Aug 2013 Boho Glam Box Review

After I got my free Julep Maven starter box, I concluded that I wasn't sure if I'd purchase it again, since I don't paint my nails all that regularly (though that is starting to change) and I have a pretty extensive collection already. But then Julep emailed me with a preview of the August boxes, and I wound up getting one anyway. These garden party colors are just plain gorgeous!

As it turns out, August is the Maven program's 2-year anniversary, so the extra gift this month was forget-me-not seeds with the sweetest quote ever. I always love the packaging on the Julep Maven boxes -- cute but efficient.

The box came with two polishes, Francis and Lois, and Doublestep, a beauty product which can be used to prevent blisters/friction on your shoes. In addition, I ordered an add-on of Sylvia from another box.

The Polish

Lois is a "dusty rose frost" polish, which I don't usually go for, but is absolutely gorgeous! It's sort of a nude pink on my skin, but the frosty, metallic-y texture gives it something special. It went on in two coats and dried like a dream. This might be my new go-to pink.

Francis is a brand new color for me -- a true celery green. It is a creme polish and looks like a versatile color that I could either use solid or in nail art designs (leaves on flowers!).

The additional color I picked up was Sylvia, a "lilac purple creme" polish from the Classic With a Twist box. I don't have any bright purples in my collection yet, and Sylvia looked like the perfect polish to fill that gap. If it's anything like the other cremes from Julep, I'm sure it'll be great!

Doublestep Foot Treatment and Friction Stick

This product is something I've never tried before. Doublestep is a shea butter-based friction stick to prevent blisters that doubles as a foot treatment. I'm excited to have a barrier on shoes I know give me blisters instead of having to prep with band-aids. (Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I should just buy shoes that don't cause blisters.) I also like the stick application, which makes it easy to target specific areas of your foot, unlike traditional lotions and creams which are kind of messy and go everywhere.

I probably never would have bought this product on its own, but now that I have some to try, it might quickly become a staple. Could this be the solution for wearing painful shoes during days full of walking, nights full of dancing, and everything in between?

Conclusion

Once again, Julep has lured me in with its beautiful colors and innovative products. Julep is really starting to become a company I love.

This time, I decided to do a little bit more digging into the value of these products to see what sort of deal the Maven box offers. Normally, each polish is valued at $14.00 and Doublestep is valued at $22.00, for a total of $66.00. With the Maven program, I paid $24.98 for all four products. Definitely a great deal if you love the polishes and products that month! I also love that Maven allows you to switch between boxes whenever you want or even choose to skip a box if nothing is calling your name.

Mani Monday: Mint with White Polka Dots

Mint nails. #nails #maniHappy #ManiMonday! I got some cute rings at F21 on my lunch break. New post at www.xomia.com

Short and sweet this time around -- just wanted to share the way I did my nails for the week. Since I have so much nail polish, I'm really trying to make an effort to do a manicure once a week and use new colors.

This week's mani is China Glaze - Re-Fresh Mint, one of my all-time favorite polishes. It applies so easily and lasts forever. On top is actually Konad's special polish in white. I thought I had a white polish, but apparently not! I'll have to keep an eye out for one. I also need a dotting tool to make my polka dots more even.

I also wanted to share that the Julep cuticle oil I've been using has been working wonders. With daily use, my cuticles are a lot less raggedy and a lot healthier. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you are low-maintenance (read: lazy) when it comes to your nails, like me. Happy Mani Monday!

Today I'll be reviewing the Julep Maven subscription program. Today I'm linking up with Mani Monday at Glitter and Gloss, too!

I'd heard of Julep Maven a while back, thanks to some of my favorite style bloggers and their always-on-point nails. The Maven program is a monthly subscription box that is primarily focused on nail polish and similar nail and hand care products. You can pick from different "style profiles," like Boho Glam or Classic with a Twist, and receive colors and products that fit that profile. And, thankfully, Julep's products are all cruelty-free and vegan, good for people like me who avoid animal products and testing.

Julep Maven also offers a lot of flexibility with its program. You get the opportunity to preview your box before you receive it, and you can cancel, send it to a friend, or accept it. It's nice to know you won't have to throw down cash for products you aren't really interested in, but it's enough of a surprise to get excited about.

So when Lexi linked to her friend's review of the Maven box she got, I noticed a great deal -- with the code FREEBOX, you only pay shipping to try out the program! (As far as I know, the code still works -- go go go!) For $3.99, was it worth the two polishes, cuticle oil, and bonus hand creme? Let's find out!

I got my Boho Glam Julep Maven box in!! Two polishes, cuticle oil, and hand creme -- all for free! Get a free box at Julep.com with code FREEBOX and please use my invite code, 19673115! I'll be posting a full review once I test all the products but so far

The Packaging

To start, I absolutely ADORE the packaging. The box itself isn't too big, but it's easy to open and inside, it is filled with decorative crinkled paper shreds and a bright pink package tied with a black bow containing the products. My box also arrived very quickly, less than a week after I ordered it! It's like receiving a gift from yourself.

The Polish

I wound up choosing the Boho Glam starter box, which comes with two polishes, Gabrielle and Clara.

Gabrielle is described by Julep as a "smoky mulberry creme" polish, and I definitely agree. It was a little thinner than I was expecting, but the color is wonderful. In the bottle, it's hard to see the purple shade, but when worn, it's decidedly purple. It's definitely darker than I am used to personally. I can see this being a great winter or fall nail polish shade. For now, Gabrielle lives on my toes.

julep colors

Clara, described as an "opaque peach creme," was my favorite of the two, but I expected that since I love sweet pastel colors. I have never painted my nails peach before, and while it was a completely new shade to me, I found myself loving it quickly! The only downside is that the polish took an extremely long time to dry. I have never had this issue before with my topcoat, so I assume it was Clara. I'll definitely try again, but despite painting my nails several hours before my yoga class, I still got smudges from my asanas. I have a hunch the polish was just a little thick and will try thinning it with some nail polish remover next time.

It's also worth noting that both polishes have had impressive lasting time and were true to the colors posted on the site.

Essential Cuticle Oil & Rock Star Hand Creme

This Essential Cuticle Oil has a roll-on application, which is perfect for someone like me who admittedly doesn't take great care of her cuticles. It's a quick, easy application, just the right amount of product, and the bottle is small enough to fit in my purse every day. I love it and I can see myself using it every day from now on!

I only got a single sample size of Julep's Rock Star Hand Creme, but it was excellent! My hands felt silky smooth, smelled great, and the lotion absorbed quickly. I'm actually planning on buying the full size of this product, since it didn't leave my hands feeling greasy after.

Conclusion

Overall, I really enjoyed my first box of the Maven program! For about $20 a pop for a box easily worth twice that, it is definitely a great value. Will I be buying it myself? It depends. I loved every product I got, but I'm not sure I need that many nail-specific products monthly. But I probably will opt in on occasion. For the manicure lover, this is a great beauty box, and would make a great gift, too!

Do you subscribe to any beauty boxes? Any good deals to share?

I'd love to review more beauty boxes, it's so fun and exciting!

Mani Monday: Nude with a Sparkle

OPI Samoan Sand
OPI Samoan Sand and Forever 21 glitter polish

Despite my fairly sizable nail polish collection, I don't actually bother painting my nails that often. This is something I'd like to change, so I'll be sharing my manicures here. I hope it'll encourage me to try some new techniques and use the nail polishes I have.

To begin, I knew I wanted to paint my nails in a soft nude color, but I wanted something a little more exciting. I saw a few ideas on Pinterest (here and here) that paired nude with glitter, and so I pulled out the glitter and got to work!

This was my first time using this color by OPI, and while I like the shade, it took over 4 coats to reach full opacity. It also applied streaky and overall gave me issues with application. I will have to see if I can troubleshoot this polish the next time I use it.

I love the way the sparkles turned out and they were surprisingly easy to do! Glitter polish is pretty forgiving that way.

Linking up today with Mani Monday and The Nail Files!
