We Could Be Heroes

Geek Girls for Suicide Prevention Giveaway

I'm totally floored by the response so far to the Geek Girls for Suicide Prevention Giveaway. So far, we have helped Autumn raise $126 towards her crisis intervention certification. In other words, her certification is over halfway funded, thanks to all of you!

This fundraising effort - especially since it's combined with comic books - is a reminder that we all have the ability to be heroes in our own way. The new Ms. Marvel, Kamala, faces fears that she's not truly a hero since she's not the blonde haired, blue eyed Captain Marvel that everyone already knows. It takes her a while to learn that she is a hero in her own right, regardless of whether or not her appearance or personality matches what others expect.

IMAlive

To me, funding Autumn's certification is heroic. Autumn will go on to save lives, and each person that donates helps make that happen. Plus, some of the people Autumn helps with may go on to work for a suicide prevention service themselves. Even spreading the word about IMAlive can help others in need - you never know who might need the service. While we might not have shapeshifting powers like Kamala, we can all help out in our own way.

There's still time to donate to Autumn's IMAlive certification and enter the giveaway - please consider donating, entering the giveaway, or sharing this post to help save lives.

Geek Girls for Suicide Prevention Giveaway

Geek Girls for Suicide Prevention Giveaway

When Harper invited me to be a part of a giveaway to promote IMAlive (specifically, Autumn's campaign to become certified), I immediately said yes. This cause is close to my heart for so many reasons.

I don't talk about it much online, but I have anxiety and depression. There are days (sometimes weeks, sometimes months) where my brain rules over any sort of reasoning, logic, or reality. It can be difficult to overcome the panic that things will never get better, or the feeling that nothing you do really matters.

While my anxiety and depression are a part of me, they aren't my whole identity. The cool thing about identities is that we have the power to choose who we want to be. I am a geek, an intersectional feminist, a grad student, a vegan, and a cat lady, all by choice. I know that, for me, focusing on all the things I can choose to be and do makes me feel at peace.

As Harper mentions in her post, one of the best things to do when I feel this way is to be gentle with myself. I have to choose activities that make me feel good, but don't require a significant amount of effort. For me, that means it's really hard for me to feel motivated to, say, go for a run when I'm depressed, but geeking out? Totally works.

IMAlive

When I am being hard on myself, it helps to escape to these fictional worlds. It's not that I wish I was somewhere else, usually, but rather, I draw a lot of inspiration from these characters and their own struggles. Being absorbed in someone else's life and seeing them resolve issues and overcome personal weakness is inspiring to me, because it reminds me that there's always time for things get back on the right track.

I'm an advocate for discussing mental health, because otherwise mental health will continue to have a stigma surrounding it. At the same time, it's important to acknowledge that mental health issues, especially suicidal thoughts, can feel impossible to talk about with friends or family. While suicide hotlines have been crucial for assisting those in need, many feel uncomfortable talking to a stranger on the phone. (I used to have really, really bad anxiety about phone calls, so I totally get it.)

IMAlive

That's why IMAlive is so wonderful - it's chat-based suicide help, so nobody has to feel awkward about phone calls. Even cooler - every single one of its representatives are trained and certified. Services like IMAlive save lives every single day. But here's the tricky part - IMAlive is run by volunteers and donations. Becoming certified costs $250. Autumn, Harper's friend, is raising money to cover her certification and training so she can help those struggling with mental issues.

We're giving away some of our favorite geek swag to show our thanks for supporting Autumn and IMAlive and to maybe help someone else out on a not-so-good day. Our goal is to get Autumn's training funded - and if we accomplish that goal, who knows? Maybe, as a group, we can help several volunteers reach their funding goals and, in turn, help save lives.

Giveaway: Ellani Designs Print & Tote Bag

Ellani Designs specializes in kawaii geekery, offering art prints, tote bags, stickers, and even graphic design work! I adore her work - there's so much in her store that I've never seen done before!

The brains behind Ellani Designs, Tanith, sent me a few goodies to review - and I was thrilled!

Ellani Designs Giveaway

The first products that caught my eye when browsing Ellani Designs were the beautiful geeky tote bags! I especially love this Harry Potter School Bag design meant to look like you're toting it to Potions or Charms class. I requested the Property of the Pokemon Champion bag (so I can pretend I'm a Pokemon master when I go to the gym, of course).

Tanith heat presses each design on by hand, and the final product is gorgeous in person! The straps are the perfect length, and the bag is large enough that I could even use it as a school bag. It also has a flat bottom so your stuff sits properly inside instead of at a weird angle. Because I was looking really closely to review the item, I could see the edges of the design - but they are about as noticeable as in the photograph (so not at all). I probably wouldn't have guessed that this is a handmade item because the quality is so impressive.

Next, I received the What Video Games Taught Me print. This quote is so powerful to me - it can feel so tempting to quit when things get difficult, but in my experience, encountering difficulty usually means something great is coming soon!

The prints come in a few different sizes, but 11 x 17 is my favorite size for posters. The print is beautiful in person - the art and lettering is crystal clear and high quality. I love all the little details throughout the piece. I don't usually care about paper quality, but this poster is printed on gorgeous, thick, glossy photo paper, and I really noticed the difference. I'm so excited to find a place to hang this in my office! (I put it in a frame to take photos - the frame isn't included.)

Everything I got was packaged with care, shipped quickly, and arrived safely, and Tanith was quick to reply to my emails. She even included a handwritten note and a bonus sticker! The entire process was smooth and easy.

Now the fun part... one of you will win $40 in credit to Ellani Designs! That's enough for a tote and a large print! Or two large prints! Or four mini prints! Or a tote and tons of stickers! Or any combination of items your heart desires! It's super easy to enter, just use the widget below. The giveaway ends March 8, so hop to it!

Don't forget to check out Ellani Designs - you won't be disappointed! Plus, there's always free shipping within the US.

The giveaway is open to readers in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK.

Giveaway: Legend of Korra Print by Peony & Book 1 DVD

Guys, The Legend of Korra airs again TODAY. I haven't been this excited about a currently-airing show in a long, long time.

I was introduced to the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series early last year by my best friend, Peony, who pops up on the blog fairly regularly! We both share a crazy love for Avatar and the new spinoff series, The Legend of Korra. Of course, since Peony is an artist, she can express her fandom a lot more beautifully than I can.

Giveaway - Peony Crafts

To celebrate the start of Book 2, Peony is giving away a free 11"x17" print of her Korra Underwater artwork! It's a downright beautiful piece. I even had the chance to show it to the voice actors at SDCC last year, and they all loved it!

In addition, the winner will also get a DVD of Book 1 of Legend of Korra! So even if you haven't seen it, you'll get the chance to. Already own it? Pass it on to a friend if you win and spread the fandom.

Giveaway - Peony Crafts

For a chance to win, just use the widget below. The giveaway ends next Friday!

And don't forget to check out Peony's Etsy shop, with items from Sailor Moon, Ace Attorney, and Animal Crossing! If you use the code BESTIE91, you can get 15% off your order.
