Style Icon: Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones

This post contains minor spoilers from HBO's Game of Thrones, but no book spoilers.

Game of Thrones has some of the most beautiful costuming I have ever seen. Each outfit tells the story of the character and the characters' wardrobes evolve as their stories do.

Sansa Stark is a character who has transformed tremendously through the first four seasons of Game of Thrones. In the beginning, Sansa is a young girl, full of dreams and naivety, but by season four, she has learned to play the political games in King's Landing. She's a somewhat controversial character among fans, especially since she begins the series as an annoying, bratty teenager. Through the seasons, she learns quickly that her former dreams for the future are simply fantasy and she must adapt. Her wardrobe reflects her constantly changing status and the careful way she must portray herself to survive. For more on Sansa's sartorial symbolism, this article is definitely worth a read (but beware spoilers!).

I interpreted four of Sansa's looks into modern outfits. With each look, I'll also analyze Sansa's state and what her wardrobe reveals about her own struggles.

Sansa Stark - Little Dove
Necklace | Dress | Belt | Vest | Boots

In the very beginning, Sansa is very much a young lady from Winterfell. She wears her hair the Northern way, had hopes of knights and romance, and wears clothing that is utilitarian, not frivolous. She dresses in simple dresses with warm detailing to protect her from the chill of Winterfell. At this point in the series, her clothing reflects her homeland. The Hound teases Sansa early on by calling her a "pretty talking bird, repeating all the pretty little words they taught [her] to recite."

To bring this look to life, I chose a simple boho-style dress with a floral print, reminiscent of the floral design on Sansa's gown. To accessorize, boots and a faux fur vest are ladylike while still hinting at a colder climate. This outfit is inspired by nature, so top the look off with a replica of Sansa's own dragonfly necklace.

In King's Landing, Sansa learns that words are her armor. She chooses her words and appearance carefully, blending in at first by choice and then by necessity. Her clothing and hairstyles become more ornate -- she is seen wearing this beautiful purple gown several times. At this point, Sansa is becoming disenchanted with reality, quickly realizing that "There are no heroes... In life, the monsters win."

To reflect the ornateness of the dresses Sansa wears in King's Landing, I chose a delicate plum dress with lace and chiffon detailing. Accessorize with subtle wolf jewelry as an ode to the Stark family and a reminder to keep your family close to your heart. A braided updo ties the look together as an homage to the elaborate braided styles of King's Landing.

This is the point in the series where I just want to give Sansa a million hugs. She's played the game of thrones as carefully as possible, somehow surviving through all sorts of twists and turns, but winds up in a nightmarish scenario. Without giving away too many details, the dress Sansa is wearing at this point has embroidery that tells her story in great detail -- a lion slashing at a wolf. At this point, despite her best efforts, she cannot escape the Lannister family.

To recreate this look, I settled on a formal cream and champagne ensemble. A unique, gold hair piece and glittery heels are party-worthy, but the monochromatic, grown-up color pallet is a dramatic shift from Sansa's previously girlish wardrobe. Finish the look with a lion necklace -- at this point, Sansa cannot afford to be loyal to her own family and must wear the banner of her hostages.

Sansa undergoes a major makeover at the end of season four, complete with a dramatic hair change. I like to think of this Sansa as "goth Sansa." After all the hardships she has been through, this Sansa is made of stone. She is cunning and calculated and seeks her own survival. Sansa herself thinks, "My skin has gone from porcelain, to ivory, to steel."

The original dress is floor-length with feathered sleeves and a corset; I chose a little black dress with a beaded neckline for the modern interpretation. Accessories are bold choices for a bold Sansa -- try a a chunky bracelet similar to her necklace and a statement ring with wolf fangs to reflect Sansa's own ferocity.

Jord Wood Watch Review + Giveaway!

We all have our go-to accessories. Some people collect purses, some love hats, and others like jewelry. I'm not a watch person. As much as I try to wear a watch, I dislike the design and size of most watches and wind up using my phone to tell time.

Jord Wood Watch
Pictured with my power mini bracelets.

Jord contacted me about their product and I was immediately curious. A watch made of wood? As beautiful as they seemed on the website, I wondered if they'd seem flimsy in real life.

I chose an Ely watch in Maple and received it quickly. The packaging was beautiful and luxurious -- I immediately thought about how one of these watches would make an impressive gift. As for my concerns about quality, they were immediately dismissed. My Ely feels sturdy and well-crafted. The wood is such an interesting design choice and when I wear my watch around, people always comment on the unique design.

Jord Wood Watch

The band was initially too big for my wrist, but it was simple to resize it myself by taking out an extra link. Now it fits perfect! The only minor complaint I have about this watch is the size. While the Ely is the smallest Jord Watch design, it is still larger than I would have liked. I think these watches would be excellent for people with bigger wrists or those who are used to wearing a watch, but for me personally, it did feel a little large. After chatting with people who wear watches regularly, they thought the size was fine, so it's probably just me!

Overall, I love my Jord watch and I'm glad to have a real wristwatch of my own. It feels like something every adult should have!

Jord is going to give a watch away to a lucky reader! Just fill out the widget below for your chance to win.

Jord was kind enough to provide me with a watch to review. All thoughts are my own.

Geek Girls, Let's Take Over Poshmark!

Poshmark

I have a confession: I am only a few steps away from being a hoarder. I have a hard time letting go of things that have sentimental value to me. I'm a generally sentimental person, which means literally everything I own has sentimental value, so I hate getting rid of anything!

I have recently decided to be ruthless and go through my belongings to make an upcoming move easier. I found that I have lots of clothes that are cute, but don't fit right, aren't my style, or are a less-good version of something I already own. While I donated a lot of clothes to Goodwill (between my partner and I? EIGHT garbage bags!), I didn't feel right getting rid of some of my nicer things. Enter: Poshmark.

Poshmark is a website and app where you can sell from your closet and shop from others' closets. For me, this means I feel better sending things I loved to a better home while recouping some of my losses. It's simple to upload a few photos, add a description, and bam, you're selling.

It's no secret that I'm trying to get more geek girls on Poshmark! Let's populate Poshmark and fill it with awesome geek girl stuff. If you decide to make an account, use the code BHHMX for a $5 credit.

ModCloth's Plus Size Anniversary + Body Positivity

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy something through a link in this post, I may get a small commission. This post was not sponsored by ModCloth and all opinions are my own.

One of my core beliefs is body positivity - the idea that every kind of body (big, small, shapes of all kinds) is a good body. Our culture shifts from one ideal body type to another, but to me, any sort of ideal is dangerous. The message shouldn't be "real women have curves" or "strong is the new skinny" - the message should be that every type of body is real, and that everyone has the privilege to feel good about the body they are in. Being body positive is another way that I try to be inclusive and loving to everyone.

I was thrilled when ModCloth contacted me about the one year anniversary of their plus size collection. While it's probably already obvious that I'm a ModCloth fanatic, one of the reasons I love the site is that they carry a wide variety of sizes. Anyone and everyone should feel good about the clothes they wear!

I Ladylike It Like That

Out of ModCloth's extensive dress selection, there are so many good finds! I was given the I Ladylike It Like That dress to style, which comes in a large range of sizes (and hey, if you like it, it's on sale right now!). I would love to wear this dress to a Sunday brunch or to a coffee shop to write up some blog posts, so that was my inspiration for this outfit. I added on my favorite cardigan ever, the Charter School Cardigan, and matching pink sandals. For accessories, I chose a simple necklace to add some detail and quirky punctuation rings - perfect for writing.

How would you style this dress?

Style Icon: Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones

Style Icon: Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones

This post will avoid spoilers from season 4, but may mention some details from the first 3 seasons - you have been warned!

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you probably know about my Game of Thrones obsession. I love all the different characters and storylines - the power struggles, the plotting and scheming! One of  my favorite aspects of Game of Thrones is the costume design. Each costume is incredibly detailed and tells a story about the character wearing it.

One of my current favorite characters is Margaery Tyrell. Margaery is described in the books to be "as clever as she is pretty," and has a kind spirit. Of course, she still has her own agenda, too! She comes to King's Landing as an outsider from Highgarden, (where I would definitely want to live - a matriarchal society that is basically a giant garden? Yes, please!). She quickly assimilates and becomes well-loved by the people of Westoros. Her costumes are uniquely Margaery and represent her heritage and personality.

Margaery Tyrell's Signature Style

Rich Jacquard Fabrics and Light Blue

At first glance, Margaery's day-to-day dresses look the same, but there are subtle differences. Margaery's clothing is almost always a light, baby blue with a bodice made of an intricate damask design. Her dresses are made of rich fabrics like velvet and silks.

Deep V-Necks, Backless Dresses, and Cut-Outs

Another consistent feature in Margaery's clothing is the presence of skin. Margaery's style is decidedly more modern than her peers, with low v-necks and stylish cut-outs. To me, the drastic difference represents both where she came from (a different place with a different climate and social rules) as well as her tendency to put her arm around others when she speaks with them. I think Margaery uses touch to establish intimacy and trust when she speaks with others (though we will have to see how genuine it is!) For more about Margaery's "armor," this post is a wonderful read.

Rose Details

The sigil of House Tyrell is a golden rose, and sometimes Margaery is known as The Little Rose. Margaery has rose detailing in some of her outfits. I especially love her rose belt, complete with thorns.

Big Hair (Full of Secrets)

Margaery's long, curly brown hair is also one of the key elements to her style. She is usually seen with some or all of it pulled back. Like many other costume design choices in the series, the hairstyles worn by women represent where they are from and their character development. (For example, Sansa, from the north, begins wearing her hair in the southern style to blend in, and eventually wears it "like Lady Margaery.")

Margaery-Inspired Outfits

Since Margaery's style is so defined, it's easy to translate it into some wearable, modern looks.

Style Icon: Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones

This dress screams Margaery to me! Between the rose print detailing, low v-neck, and the perfect shade of blue, Margaery would definitely wear this in a modern-day Westoros. Paired with a rose chain belt to imitate Margaery's own, rose accessories, and delicate sandals, this dress is a perfect way to combine beauty and ambition. Add a lacy cardigan to throw on top in case your climate isn't as forgiving as the Highgarden.

Style Icon: Margaery Tyrell

I love this dress - the pattern is like the one Margaery wore in the Entertainment Weekly photoshoot, and the cut-out fits Margaery's style. This look is a little darker and a little dressier - perfect for going to a fancy event and plotting alliances. Pair it with gold accessories, sparkly glitter heels, and a bright pink lipstick. The earrings and rings both have tiny rose details, a subtle hint to House Tyrell. Wear your hair pulled up with cascading curls for the ultimate Margaery effect.

March Wishlist

March Wishlist

1. Mako Mankanshoku Figure - Kill la Kill's final episode just aired last Thursday. I haven't kept up with an anime week-to-week, as it aired, in a long, long time. Watching Kill la Kill live was thrilling! Mako is my favorite character (Nonon is a close second!) and this Nendoroid figure is one of the most expressive I've ever seen. It also comes with a tiny pug wearing a hoodie.

2. Waffle Lovin' Stephanie Brown Brooch - I've fangirled over BatEarrang for a long while now, but only recently made my first order. Jessica makes vintage-inspired jewelry from "rescued" comic books, and each piece is lovely and unique! If you love the concept, but have a penchant for obscure characters, she accepts custom orders, too.

3. Kawaii for Life Print - Nothing says "kawaii" like pastel hair, bows, and cupcakes. This print would be super cute above a dresser or vanity!

4. Karaoke Songstress Shorts - I am so ready for spring! I've been buying crop tops and I think these high-waisted shorts would match perfectly. (Plus, the design reminds me of Marceline - always a good thing!)

5. Set the Serene Swimsuit (Top, Bottom) - I'm not sure I've ever worn a two-piece swimsuit, but this season's retro, high-waisted trend makes me want to try it out. ModCloth has a ton of cute swimwear, both one and two-pieces as well as lots of plus-size options!

6. Batman Muscle Tee - More Batman Batgirl always.

What's on your wishlist this month?

P.S. - Tonight, I'm going to be joining some fellow Female Geek Bloggers for a con-at-home G+ hangout, all about cosplay! We may or may not wear costumes. (Just kidding, we're cosplayers - of course we're going to wear costumes.) We'll post a link to the hangout on Twitter with #FGBCosplay so keep an eye out.
